| What happened? |
Day 1: We started out at 8 AM to a morning breakfast at the Cameo. There was a large group of 15, once again some old friends and some new friends that we were meeting for the first time. The large group consisting of Tina, Patty, CW, Harvey, Teddy, Jim, Teri, Bill, Anthony, Maureen, Pete, Carmen, Boaz and I and one person who I actually didn?t get a chance to talk to and could have even been someone I knew. We chatted about ornaments all morning speculating on what the event was going to be like, what the variants would be, etc. The food at Cameo was great.
At 15 minutes to 10, we started walking toward CATZ and the line was already forming. The windows at CATZ are filled with wonderful treats that are part of Connie?s personal collection. We got our event package and were greeted by Connie Nicoud the storeowner. Everyone began the hunt from the 5 trees of ornaments. I personally picked up 3 pieces off the trees, but I scanned and scanned looking for the missing treasure. They started calling numbers for the variant tree. Boaz and I were 88 and 89. Each person got to choose one ornament from the 3 variants that were exclusive to the event (Greetings Trick or Treat, Light the Tree purple plaid, Under Construction ornament snowball). The store was well organized and the store zipped thru the numbers. The staf were like a well oiled machine. Keep the lines moving and did an outstanding job. Boaz and I had our strategy figured out on what we were going to purchase. Our numbers were called and I blurted out, ?I?ll take the Lighting the Tree?. Well as luck would have it, the person before me got the last one. So, we had to re-think in a hurry and I took Greetings and Boaz the Under Construction. About 20 minutes before I was discussing with Jim Elia, about which piece to take, he was deciding between the Lighting the Tree and Greetings and I helped him decide on the Lighting the Tree. So I only had myself to blame, even though he probably would have taken the Lighting the Tree anyway. I know if I convinced him to take the Greetings for my personal gain, I couldn?t live with myself anyway. Bad Karma you know. The best part was that each person was entitled to buy and take home 2 of the event ornaments, and you had to order 2. It was so nice to know we were coming home with our treasured loot. The store handled everything well, from retrieving ornaments to checking out. It was such a pleasure to shop in the store and this was my first time meeting Connie after purchasing my first ornament from her in 1993 (Pre-Breen). All of these years and never meeting her, we spent sometime chatting with her on the way out. It was such a pleasure.
The evening event at the Lawrence Gallery was a real treat. Everyone started arriving at 6 PM. They were serving wine and drinks, and a large table of appetizers to begin nibbling on. We had a great time looking at art, chatting with friends. I finally got sometime to chat a little bit with Rachelle, Cathy, Don, Rob and David, Pam, Vicki, Rich and a bunch of others. They had a beautiful garden in the back with artwork abound. It was quite peaceful. This was a great event as Boaz and I finally got to meet Patricia in person. Patricia loved Boaz?s name. We had a photo op with Patricia, and she looked radiant. She was telling us about the workers in Poland and her apprentice program. The night went on with Good Food, Good Drink, and Good Friends both new and old. When the Complimentary ornaments were given out, everyone clamored about to see if their names were going to be called. Everyone had a chance at a gift certificates from the store, or a chance to purchase the Art Gallery exclusive Mini Redoute or lucky to win one of the ornaments. The highlight give away was a ?Lighting the Tree? white with red and gold, and green stripe plaid. It was beautiful. Connie did an absolutely wonderful job arranging this event and kudos to her staff as they were all extremely attentive and understood customer service. The night ended and a group of use headed over to the City Grill for a nightcap. What a beautiful site to sit in a bar overlooking the city of Portland. It was the perfect way to end the night. A special thanks to Teddy and Harvey for the drink.
Day 2: Well another early morning breakfast at the Cameo. Today it was a yummy Belgian Grain waffle with nuts. And Mike Boro ordered a pancake that was nothing like I have ever seen in my life. It was flopping over the sides. It was wonderful spending time chatting with Mike?s mom also. We got some of the inside dirt on Mike as a kid?just kidding.
We headed over to the store and Patricia handed out the 2007 Portfolios as we entered. To our right in the display case were some of the 2007 samples. OH BOY, watch out wallet as Patricia & Eric has once again out done themselves. There were 4 motifs in the display case: Gingerbread, Red Peppermint, Bees, and Snowy & black. My favorite is ?Balance?, a Santa holding a bar and balancing 2 Christmas ornament balls. The ?Christmas Crossing? is to die for as it is Santa holding a stop and go sign, along the bottom of is skirt is a mountain scene with a train going around it. WONDERFUL. And Boaz?s favorite, the ?Cadeau Reindeer? a reindeer popping out of a box, way too cute. And many, many more?..We all headed for our second pick off the variant tree. By the time we got to our number most of the best goodies were gone, but still picked up a few trinkets. Another collector offer Jim Elia the Greetings he didn?t get the day before, and I know Mike Boro offered his extra Greetings to another collectors. This is what collecting is all about, friends helping friends.
At 11 AM we went upstairs to the Uptown Billiard Club for Eric?s Snowman?s Social Tea Party. Some bagels, fruit and drink were available. It gave us some down time as we waited to start the signing. Numbers were called and people received 2 gifts from the studio, a wonderful paintbrush and a very cute ball ornament snowman face. The cookies at the tea party were the same as the ornament. Little did we know what we had been eating was based upon the design of the studio gift. Boaz and I got our pieces signed. I can tell Boaz and Patricia connected somehow as they once again started chatting. I wish I had Boaz?s social skills and the ability to chat. He is a social butterfly. More complimentary ornaments were given away. The highlight piece was a floral Connaught Santa. The last piece given away I did not see but what I was told was Patricia normally gives away a special garland. The social ended and everyone left for some lunch and some of us will take a nap.
The dinner was at the Governor?s Hotel, an old landmark hotel in Portland. Cocktails started the event and people were around chit chatting. You figured we would be exhausted for all of our talking and laughing by now. Dinner was fabulous, it was prepared by Jake?s Grill. Mixed Salad greens and everyone was able to add the extras to the salad that they liked. Salmon, Chicken, Beef, Pasta, Vegetables, there was something for everyone. I had a bit of each and they were all excellent. Perfecto! When we started desserts the rowdy (LOL) was a having a bit of fun when Harvey presented Cathy a special pastry from Voodoo donuts. I don?t want to say anymore but after that point that table was the loud and laughing table. It sounded as if they had a ball. The desserts were a Tiramisu cake, Brownie fudge with fresh strawberries or Apple strudel. Then the fun start, the game for the night was ?Deal or No Deal? and hosting was Keith Faisbak(sp?). We heard hints about the game the day before and stated that it would be really funny if a non-collector were chosen to have to make the deals. Derek Sims, Rachelle?s husband was picked. Perfect? The top prize was a $100 gift certificate. Well Derek escaped with $30 cash and Connie?s husband Rex played the part of the Banker Rex. It was a hoot.
Next we went on to the complimentary ornaments giveaways for the night. The first name called out was mine. I didn?t know what to do I think I was in a bit of shock. I was so elated. I won a Tea Time in black with intricate bluebirds painted all around the tea canister. As I stated before Karma exists. The top prize was a Swing Time in red and white stripe with a reindeer medallion painted on the front. As everyone was leaving, Patricia was saying good-bye to us. And Boaz mentioned to her that someday he would like to tell her about his families past about escaping from Poland in WWII and the Nazis. She stopped and said tell me know. We spent 20 minutes or so chatting with her. What a way to end the evening. Patricia is truly a remarkable person. Patricia is so passionate about the world we live in and both Boaz and I enjoyed our time with her as we got to see a side of Patricia. We felt here is someone who cares about the human race and believes that we each need to speak up when injustices are happening about us, no matter how small. To be silent, is just that same as those that offend us. Patrica was amazing, and touched us in a way I can?t even describe. What a way to end the event. Thank you Connie & Rex and of course Patricia.
